Traditional Teochew Mooncake

The closure of Thye Moh Chan Cake House, 泰茂栈 at Geylang Lorong 27 drawn much interest to the long forgotten "Traditional Teochew Mooncake". We went down to show our last support but were put off by the waiting queue of crowds!

Traditional Teochew Mooncake, 大朥饼 "Lar Pia" ($12)

It was therefore welcoming when Aunt made a gift of the Mooncake for us! "It doesn't have to be from Thye Moh, silly. Several old confectionery shops bake these, but only during the Mid-Autumn Festival." She said.

This one from their favourite bakery in Hougang, the Thye Lee Confectionery (泰利饼家). While Grandma like the ones from Poh Guan Cake House in Chinatown.

The cake is big and i could cut it up to 12 neat slices to share! At first bite you may find it a tad too sweet but i was already missing its fine smooth paste by the next evening. It was very different from our usual Mooncakes. I think it is nice.

Read that this plain looking pastry was the earliest bake of Teochew Mooncake; the Yam version with deep fried crispy crust was introduced much later, probably when the society becomes more affluent.

With just days before the festival, do consider getting this humble mooncake instead. Eating it warms the heart.
