华利, Hua Li Fried Carrot Cake, TOP 10!

Fried Carrot Cake, White (M, $4)

I wasn't reading the TOP 10 hawker food list in Singapore. It was a coincide that Hua Li in the Marsiling Mall Hawker Centre is listed. Yes, delivery is skilful; they are indeed, a notch above the rest.

The pan frying item is not overly oily, and the seasoning done just right. It was sinful, but worth the occasional indulgence.

Never mind the signboard featuring on carrot cake; don't miss their fried oysters.

Oyster Omelet @ 802 Tampines

Oyster Omelete ($5)

Two favorites, dish out from the steaming kitchen of the nameless stall at 802, Tampines Ave 4 kopitiam. Almost every table is waiting for their oyster omelet. But like many customers here, we too, took to their fried Hokkien noodle for its very fresh, bouncy seafood - the prawns and squids.

The highlight is still the oyster omelet - crisp, yet not overly done, retaining the moist, fluffy eggs and flour mixtures which we loved. Oiliness is well controlled here as well.

The no signboard stall, easily matches our favourite of Lim's Oyster at Jalan Berseh. Or even yummier.

Stall 21 @ East Coast Lagoon

Fried Oyster Omelet ($4)

The recent rainy weather makes it perfect for some meaty prime ribs and peppery broth from the Han's at the East Coast Lagoon Food Village. Also a good excuse for the sinfully crispy oyster omelet, right next door.

The stall next door came without a name, just a tiny stall number '21'. And you might not expect any good omelet from them as they also peddle a variety of many others - Hokkien noodle, char kway teow, carrot cake. Giving an impression of being Jack of all trades.

But they are quite exceptional. Bring back to mind the crispy fried oyster omelet from the Beng Hiang restaurant, albeit the oiliness. And our minimum order of $4 delivers 5 oysters. This is value.

亿胜功夫, Gongfu Oyster Omelette

Oyster Omelette ($4)

There are several stalls of oyster omelette in the Old Airport Road Food Centre, some with really bold signboards but we picked the unassuming 'Gongfu' (#01-100). Well, we noticed their brisk business too.

It was your regular oyster omelette, just a tad oily. Our smallest serving fetches 3 fresh oysters, and lots fried eggs and batter. It is satisfactory.

Lim's Fried Oyster, 蚝煎林!

Oyster Omelette ($5)

Finally, a good orh luak in a long time!

Oyster Lim at Jalan Berseh Food Centre had it both crispy and gooey over the steady fire. With just the right amount of oil, and size of oysters that weren't tastelessly small or overwhelmingly large. Everything was just right. Boy, we were excited! Eating and packing away for the family supper.

Despite the hefty price tag of 5 dollars for the minimum order, we were well satisfied to feel pinched. Then came Dad's approving grin while he indulged in his favorite omelet. Priceless.

好味, Good Spice Carrot Cake

Black Carrot Cake, with Chili ($2)

Some 10 years ago, we used to patronize this old carrot cake stall in  Pek Kio Food Centre for their bargain of $1 minimum order, and generous use of eggs. The taste was nondescript; we just gobbled up the cheap fare.

Quite unexpectedly today, as we savoured the warm plate, we noticed nicely charred bits that greatly enhanced the carrot cake experience - this tiny difference sets it apart from other mediocre stalls.

The minimum order is $1.50 now, but we wouldn't be returning just for its low price.

Malaysia Boleh!

After many visits, we still couldn't fathom the perpetual queue for Penang Char Kuay Teow in Malaysia Boleh . JurongPoint. It was oily, and doesn't impress us with its taste. Yeah, we don't like it that much.

We like instead, the Klang styled pork rib soup, serve dipping hot in a claypot. The strong herbal essence of the soup, soft meaty pork ribs and slightly oiled fragrant rice are all divine. Amazingly, the soup goes well with soft, starchy, scrambled eggs-like oyster omelet. Never mind that the dish was unusually runny and oily! It is sinfully good.

Some of us were scraping hard at the tasty remains of the claypot rice. The others tickled themselves silly over the palm-sized Amy Yip buns. The juicy steamed bun oozes delicious meat gravy as we cut it open!

Our wicked lunch finished with a Chendol that transported us back to Malacca town!

Fried Carrot Cake - No MSG!

Carrot Cake, black ($2.50)

Came back for Mei Mei Satay at Hiag Road Food Centre. And while waiting, we saw the stall dishing out delicious looking fried carrot cake too - both the white and the black versions. Looked so tempting, we got to have it.

It is good. Too good even for Ric who usually hates the MSG-laden indulgence; this one doesn't, much to his relief. Most of the pieces were well charred but stayed soft and moist inside, it was most addictive. I am salivating as i wrote this.

Supper Time @ Newton Circus

Grilled Chicken Wings ($1.30 x3), Oyster Omelet ($5)

Like any average Singaporean, our visit to the Newton Circus Food Centre can be more than 10 years back. Yes. Because the food centre has been known as a tourist trap for its touts and exorbitant prices. But with rising food cost all over the island, a meal here matches your spending in any air-conditioned food court.

There goes our prejudice. And welcoming us into the alfresco dining was an air of expectation and excitement - where we get to see polite touting activities and people-watch interesting group of tourist. Ignore the touting of tourist items like the expensive BBQ Seafood; choose your own seating, walk around and place your order from any preferred food stalls with clearly displayed price list. Enjoy yourself!

And we did have a good time, soaking up the vibrant vibe about the place.

While the inner courtyard offers several repeat of BBQ seafood, chicken wings, fried noodles and oyster omelette stalls with similar pricing, we decide on Hup Kee Fried Oyster, 合记炒蠔煎 (Stall 73) and R&B Express (Stall 72) for their grilled chicken. Fairly good food!

亮亮, Liang Liang Fried Carrot Cake

Black Carrot Cake ($2.50)

Always love a plate of good fried carrot cake, soft, steamy from the frying wok, you couldn't wait to sink your teeth in them. As with many in Singapore, my family adore carrot cakes.

Here's a good stall in Commonwealth Crescent Market, #02-69, but operating hours are limited, till 1pm only. Have it when you are in the vicinity ")

Singapore Food Trail - The Flyer

Every food courts in Singapore that tries to model after the road side food streets of the 1960s, 1970s proves to be such a hit with the locals, as well as the tourists. Minus the unhygienic environment of the old days, such food courts provide comfort dinning in cool air-conditioned or balmy electric fans.

What i love most about the place is the lively old songs that played at the background, while dinning, savoring the atmosphere rather than our already all too familiar hawker food.

At the Singapore Food Trail in the Singapore Flyer today, i was indulging in the 60s mood while Ric cracks over the food to buy ;)

Katong Keah Kee Fried Oysters ($5)

A $5 plate brought about helping of 6-7 Oysters - seems a good bargain right? It was nice enough, but aren't the best that we know of ;)

Quite a popular stall with continuous queue forming.

Lagoon Kampong Rojak ($4)

Another crowd pleaser; with the hawker asking every customer, "$6?"
"No, $4." was the frequent replies ;)

The plate comes with a generous mix of fried fritters, or more commonly called Youtiao in Mandarin. But no Taupok here; in case you must have it for your rojak..

Oh! And i almost forgot to mention, while most Singapore food courts are dominated by China national helper and cooks, the stalls here are helmed by our locals, even senior looking veterans! Appreciate!

We do need to retain our local culture, right ;)

美记, Fried Carrot Cake

Fried Carrot Cake, black ($2)

Also in Geylang Bahru Food Centre, there's this stall of fried carrot cake that brother's been patronising; packing them back home for us. Just looking at the nice charred of the fried kueh and eggs might already leave you salivating.

A word of caution, the stall uses factory processed 'pillow-roll' carrot cake, not home-made ones; maybe that explains their generous serving portion. And they rest from 2-5pm daily.

松记, Song Kee Fried Oyster

Oyster Omelet ($3)

If you were surrounded by the many stalls of Fried Oyster Omelet stalls in East Coast Lagoon Food Village and do not know which to order from, place your bet with Song Kee Fried Oyster - the one with most patrons.

Song Kee (No. 15) was an old tenant at East Coast and its generous portion at $3 with at least 5-6 Oysters was a good bargain. Yes, we packed another for takeaway ;)

*****

It was quite sad to note that not all old hawkers at the East Coast Lagoon Food Village packs in the good stuffs, still.

Tonight, we had ordered from Ah Hwee BBQ Chicken Wings (No. 14) that tasted overly salted with their seasoning and Lagoon Leng Kee Beef Kway Teow Soup (No. 33) who entrusted our taste senses to MSG? It was so bad, my lips numbed while drinking from its Soup.

柯双兴, Carrot Cake

Dark Sauced Carrot Cake ($2)

I missed Ke Shuan Xing Carrot Cake in North Bridge Road Market and Food Centre. The honest pricing of minimum $1.50 stays but we decidedly need the extras :)

And am both surprised yet comforted to know that a younger man is helming the stove while the elder hawker is helping out at the stall today!? Surprised because i could taste nought the difference ;)

We then packed another, home for Mum.

Katong Fried Oyster (亚顺)

And so we had it. Made our rounds about Old Airport Rd Food Centre and decided on this stall for our Fried Oyster Omelet craving. There are at least 5 other stalls here offering this fare.

Fried Oyster ($4)

This can be one of the better stalls around; and $4 yield about 5 Oysters, not a scrooge serving either. So we packed 1 for Dad too.

No late Sat night out today; there's the World Cup matches to catch tonight ;)

炎成, Yan Seng Teochew Kueh

Ric used to bring me to this stall at Tekka Centre , some 10 years ago, for breakfast, tea break or simply to pack home some Teochew Kueh.

But what hooked us was its Fried Black Carrot Cake.

Black Carrot Cake ($2.50)

If you are one who loved plenty of sweet dark black sauce on your kueh, come here, they give generously :) Served hot from the wok, it can be rather addictive.

But we had sort of outgrown it... finding it a little overwhelming ;)

顺利 Oyster Omelet

蚝煎, Oyster Omelet ($5)

As a prelude to our Dinner tonight, we had an order of Oyster Omelet from Stall No. 28 in Ayer Rajah Food Centre, Blk 503.

Plump Oysters over crisp oily and starchy Flour Egg mix - Mom's craving, having watched a TV program on the origins of Teochew Oyster Omelette, few nights back.

Ric says the chef here had done a good job.
Well, i had prefer our Homecook version. Love the fat Oyster though ;)

Mei Ling Street Carrot Cake

Other than previously visited Phoenix Garden Carrot Cake that boasts of using 'Handmade' kueh, their neighbor at #02-41 is making the same claim.

Carrot Cake, Black ($2.50)

Though pricier than the $1.50 at Phoenix Garden, this stall serve a chunkier fried Carrot Cake pieces that pack its aroma in the bigger bite.

Less oily version too.

This stall is a morning operating stall only, the very minute i snapped this picture of its Signboard, the light went off sharply at 10:45am :)

So be early, it's worthy a try.

Phoenix Garden Carrot Cake

Located diagonally across Jasen Dessert Hut in Mei Ling Food Centre, a fried Carrot Cake stall that operates since 1977 and boasted of home-made rice cake for their kueh. Wow!

Carrot Cake, White ($1.50)

Kueh that's fried with a little burn and crisp yet staying soft on the inside; this cook had done a good job with his wok.

Pretty oily but well worth the calories :)
Do come early, they closed by 2pm.

Ke Shuan Xing Fried Carrot Cake

Black Fried Carrot Cake ($1.50)

Today, we had breakfast at North Bridge Rd Market before going downtown shopping.

And Ke Shuan Xing Carrot Cake was one of our popular Fried Carrot Cake stall.

The elderly hawker with his 2 other older lady, offers friendly service that gave you the dining nostalgia of the Singapore 60s once again :)

An old school good plateful at a modest pricing of just $1.50.
