126 Dim Sum Wen Dao Shi (搵到食) since 1985

Century Egg & Minced Pork Porridge ($3)

Upon a friend's recommendation, 126 Dim Sum bought us to Geylang. True to his words, the variety of dim sum here is vast with choices aplenty. But we wouldn't vouch for the quality - or finest of ingredients if you are looking for one.

The meal feels like a mess up of the taste buds; with strong seasoning that left us thirsty. There was nothing quite commendable, nor of character. Save for their well pleasing pork porridge; almost ruin by their generous sprinkle of fried garlic.

In short, we didn’t enjoy our meal.
Certainly not a place for purist who seek fine, simple taste in food.

Treasure Pot Lunch @ Crystal Jade Kitchen

Steamed Cheong Fun with Shrimp ($6.80++)
Deep-fried Beancurd Skin Roll with Minced Pork and Shrimp ($5.80++)

Mini Treasure Pot ($58.80++)

Planned a simple dim sum lunch at the Crystal Jade Kitchen. But colleagues dropped a bomb; with everybody voting for the expensive claypot dish which contains everything we like!

Delightful ingredients include baby abalones, quality fish maw, scallops, mushrooms, fresh large prawns, roast meat, roast duck and more. Well, it was worth it. Instead of having multiple little dishes, we had, and enjoyed this supreme pot.

With their all time favourite fried rice and beancurd roll, our lusting palates were satisfied.

Crystal Jade Kitchen

Steamed Ha Kau ($6.30++)

At times, life can be as simple as a good ha kau (shrimp dumpling) or siew mai (meat dumpling). They whet the lost appetite and comfort the soul. Such's my definition of good food.

Crystal Jade Kitchen just seems to have one of the best. I can have them everyday; along with their fragrant egg fried rice. That's the good life. Never mind the meatier roasted meat combo, or the savory Ee-fu noodle.

When you don’t feel like eating, which food comes to mind?

Dim Sum Lunch @ Canton Paradise

Steamed Prawn Dumpling "Ha Kao" ($5.80++)

Brought Mom and Dad to dim sum at Canton Paradise and we draw mixed reviews - Mum and myself are of lighter taste buds, so it's obvious that we didn't quite enjoy ourselves. But Dad is a smoker who enjoys strong tasting food; even he finds their seasoning very much over-whelming, but nice he said - then he finished all his water which he usually loathes.

Unanimously, we suffered from the briny congee (reaping 5 large fresh scallops though), the overly deep fried dough fritters and squashy Ee-fu noodles, albeit the nice wok-hei.

It was comforting though, to see Dad so eagerly picked up the steamed chicken feet, and finishing the entire plate.

包今天, Bao Today

Steamed Chicken Feet ($4+), Glutinous Rice in Lotus Leaf ($4.50+), Honeyed BBQ Pork Bao ($2.50+)

We never actually trusted dim sum served in air-conditioned dining, at least not whole-heartedly. So it was the 30% promotion at Bao Today's newly opened branch in Rendezvous Grand Hotel that lured us here tonight.

Happily, dinner was satisfactory - the steamed feet, char siew bao, dumpling and warm, smooth porridge. What's perplexing is their use of syrupy minced meat in the glutinous rice layer to produce the required mushy mouth-feel of this recipe; we thought it's bizarre. Meat pieces in the porridge tastes funny too..

With a good discount? Then yes, we can come back and be selective.

Dim Sum at Canton Paradise, and Peking Duck Promotion

Roasted Peking Duck, whole ($58++)

Canton Paradise is where the office loves to entertain - welcome, farewell and birthday lunches.

Everyone, particularly loves their roasted Peking duck which i too agrees. And was always secretly praying for a larger serving of their springy Yee Fu noodle with the duck meat, it was addictive.

Braised Yee Fu Noodle with Shredded Duck Meat ($10++, with order of Peking Duck)

While the office (made up of mostly guys) preferred fried dim sum, i thought their steamed entrees were much excellent. Maybe it's the oil used, i quickly develops a bitter aftertaste when we returns to the office. Sipping my favorite warm honey lemon drink from the restaurant didn't help.

Even the supposedly fragrant Osmanthus cake with water chestnuts were greasily pan-fried ($4.20++). Their crispy BBQ honey pork bun ($4.80++) does it so much better.

Nevertheless, Canton Paradise does offer some fine Cantonese fare with their best from Hong Kong - very much a roast specialist, but aren't a Dim Sum guru with their lardy pastries and fried.

根叔美食世家, Gen Shu Steamed Rice

Hong Kong Steamed Rice with Chicken and Salted Fish ($3.80)
Sampan Porridge ($3.50)
Steamed Yam Cake with Rice Noodle Roll ($2.80)

If there's 1 place for decent HK steamed rice at hawker pricing, we reckon this is it - at Gen Shu's, the Toa Payoh Lor 4, Blk 74 Food Centre. We though it has really good standard.

Gen Shu mastered the technique of producing moist plump grains, finished with a flavorful roast! It was then topped up with good quality sausages, salted fish and boneless meat from a chicken drumstick. Howbeit, my return would be plainly for the charred steamed rice.

Broiled porridge for Ric who is suffering from a really bad throat infection and fever. I understand that the porridge is delicious, with ingredients aplenty - you can't see that, as they were buried beneath the heaviness of the well textured porridge.

We didn't actually enjoyed Gen Shu's famous yam cake today... seems a little too soft for our liking.

根叔, Gen Shu Gourmet

Steamed Yam Cake ($2.20)

There have been so much raving of good food from Gen Shu Mei Shi Jia by ieatishootipost that we simply had to try them for ourselves.

Some hit-and-miss. But you could never go wrong with their yam cake - one of the very best around.

Chee Cheong Fun ($2.20)

Steamed Siew Mai ($2.20)

Glutinous Rice ($2.70)

Nice Cheong Fun. Skip the Siew Mai. Good Glutinous Rice. Special Hong Kong styled fried noodle, not of our typical yellow noodles - worthy a try. 'Sea-fresh' tasting Bee Hoon. Great chili sauce.

Again. Don't miss the Yam Cake.

Old Hong Kong Bruce Cafe - revised menu

Pan-fried Chives Dumpling in Beancurd Skin, 3 pcs ($3.20+)

Today's visit to Bruce at University Town found they had put up a new menu, with new pricing to facilitate their episodic buffet offerings. Our favourite 6 pieces Dim Sum Basket was also removed and replaced.

If you are planning to visit them for buffet, keep in mind that they do better with Dim Sum, cooked food is fairly average.

Steamed Barbecued Pork Buns, 3 pcs ($3.20+)

海皇, Netune HK Dim Sum

Fresh Shrimps Chee Cheong Fun ($2.80)
Streamed Shrimps Dumpling, 3s ($2.60)

We didn't have to think very far when we needed some 'confirmed good' Hong Kong Dim Sum. Alas, being absent here for the longest time (4 years ago!), we hoped the stall in Marine Parade Food Centre maintain its standard.

Hakka Yong Tau Fu ($2.60)

Black Bean Chicken Feet ($2.60)

Lo Mai Gai, Glutinous Rice in Lotus Leaf ($2.80)

Century Egg & Pork Congee ($2)

They still do!

And we never have to stuff ourselves silly going for dim sum buffets, we just come here. For their meticulous cooking that made our palates, tummies and wallet, happy.
