Ah Lock 豆腐店 : Hakka Tofu Bowl

Hakka Tofu Bowl (Signature), $5.50

I love Hakka Thunder Tea, and thought Ah Lock Tofu serves something similar but no. Instead the presentation reminds me of Korean bibimbap, and its healthy clean ingredients of Japanese cuisine.

At the Yishun Park Hawker Centre, you get this fusion of Hakka Yong Tau Foo and Thunder Tea - atop pump Japanese grains. Healthy taste is in this one with their Alfalfa sprouts and shredded seaweed. Too plain for you? Soak up some of their mild spicy sweet dipping sauce.

This is refreshing, healthy yet very tasty.

百年, Bai Nian Yong Tau Foo

Weekday Lunch Promotion: Mon-Fri, 1130-1400hrs
Yong Tau Foo Set ($5.80, include 1 chicken wing)

Bai Nian, in the cool comfort of air-conditioned food court in Viva Business Park will be the yong tau foo stall you would wanna eat. You don't select your pieces here and only vermicelli is available, but the serving lady would ask helpfully if you take bittergourd, and if you like more vermicelli; at no extra cost.

A standard bowl comes with 7 pieces of hand-filled yong tau foo - prawn ball, pork, bittergourd, beancurd, white, black and gold bean curd rolls. Each filled with well-textured fish, prawn, squid or the pork fillings. This is especially good. With their chili sambal and freshly fried chicken wings too. Must try.

We would be returning.

The Hakka Stall

Yong Tau Fu Bee Hoon, dry ($3.50, minimum order of 5 pieces at $3)

Read a friend rejoicing on Facebook when her favourite Yong Tau Fu stall (#01-25), reopens at the newly renovated Ghim Moh Market and Food Centre. Makes me want to try it.

I say it's homely taste that draws the many customers. When you grew tired of eating out daily, such out-of-factory stuffs are striking to the taste buds. Do come in early for lunch, as most their pieces got sold out fast. Today, i wasn't left with much selections too.

Oh. And their chili is good.

Yong Tau Foo, SG50 建国时代

Last Sunday, long queue at this Yong Tau Foo stall caught our attention at the Bukit Merah View Food Centre. A newly opened stall that had quite won over the neighborhood as we saw many coming with 'tingkat' or containers for takeaway.

It is unsurprising for the stall's popularity because handmade Yong Tau Foo stall is hard to come by; especially one that is going for a song - $3 consists of noodle and 9 pieces of Yong Tau Foo! If this is too mild for you, go for their Ampang-styled Yong Tau Foo, named Yuan Yang ($6); or the deep fried platter ($4).

Having assurance of the homemade goodness, we returned tonight to a comfortable crowd for another MSG-free meal.

BEST! Laksa Yong Tau Foo!

Laksa Yong Tau Foo ($3.50)

As if their star Chicken Chop Curry Noodle wasn't enough to steal the limelight of Hong Lim Market and Food Centre, Cantonese Delights have to mind-blow us with their very excellent Laksa Yong Tau Foo!

All ingredients were stuffed with fish paste and freshly deep fried, save for the fishball and soft beancurd. Given our lighter taste buds, we were surprised how utterly tasty is each of their plump pieces! None cloying at all. We would say it's very shiok!

Many were having extra side order of their braised chicken feet also. But we ARE hurrying back for their Laksa Yong Tau Foo - an entire bowl for myself. No more sharing!

大姐, Da Jie Niang Dou Fu

Soya Bean Soup, Yong Tau Foo

Another stall naming itself the 'Big Sister', this time it is the Halal Da Jie Yong Tau Foo and they have a website you could visit. Ric wanted the soupy rendition while i was craving for some savoury sauce, and Aunt chooses the Laksa.

We aren't disappointed with the food. Ingredients are fresh and the sauces well balanced. But Da Jie could perfect their service if the serving of noodles weren't this petty; doing with lesser salt on the Laksa's samba chili and improves the Laksa recipe to add more punches. Then could they be the 'Big Sister' and charges $13.80 for 3 bowls of noodles with 6 ingredients each.

喜相逢, Xi Xiang Feng Yong Tou Fu

It is always exciting to watch queues outside of food stalls. If you are hungry at Blk 724, Ang Mo Kio Food Centre Ave. 6, jump right in front of this Yong Tou Hu stall, select your ingredients, pass it back to the stall owner before joining the queue for collection.

If you are troubled and have no peace, Jesus will give you peace - the sticker on their signboard say so. Amen!

Yong Tou Fu Noodle, Soup ($6.60 for 2 bowls)

Yong Tou Fu Bee Hoon, Dry

The 30 mins of waiting in line begin to trouble us... before peace of satisfaction reign in after the frenzy of receiving these delicious looking bowls. It was eyes catching that the soup bowl came, lavished with loads of soft soy beans and giant anchovies! Drink up!

And we can't be more convinced now that the queue was not bogus; this stall does serve good fresh Yong Tou Fu ingredients (both the fried stuffs and those of the raw fish paste) with robust soup or tangy sweet sauce option. Try their special bee hoon that's firm and springy or the uncommonly suggested cheong fun.

I would really love to return for their Yong Tou Fu, with an extra of chee cheong fun!

培记,Poy Kee Yong Tau Foo

We spotted this another queue for Yong Tau Foo (there are several stalls of popular Yong Tau Foo here) in People's Park Cooked Food Centre, so let's try them. It was late lunch for us.

Yong Tau Foo, soup ($3)

Ric was having dry throat discomfort and opted for the soupy noodles while i had the dried ones. Standard ingredients from these traditional Yong Tau Foo stalls were served to you without the need for your selection, but they were all good and consist mostly Fish paste with bean curd or Tofu skin.

Although there was lots of Soy beans used in the Yong Tau Foo soup, we guess lots of MSG was in this delicious tasting bowl too? Were really thirsty after the meal. The anchovies (ikan bilis) throw in, however does sweeten the deal.

大埔, Hakka Yong Tau Foo

We had returned today with the intention for packing away 20s Hakka Soon Ban, but they were sold out already, at 12:25PM!?

Nevertheless, their Yong Tau Foo makes up for it ;)

In fact, it was good.. 8 big chunky Yong Tau Foo pieces that screams "handmade" in flavorsome soybean based soup!

Yong Tau Foo, with dry noodle ($3)

I love these thinly, flat springy noodles ladled richly with oily minced meat! It was yummylicious!

And had much tummy filling effect ;)

Hakka Yam Abacus ($2)

Chewy with full Yam aroma. The Hakka Abacus was non greasy at all compared with my last try in Shunfu Market.

Yong Tou Foo, 15 cents

Our dining location at Bedok would always end at the Bedok South Food Centre, Blk 16 for its $2 Cuttlefish with Kanggong that attracts long queues; its popularity has grown since it last appeared on TV.

Another stall that's a gospel to the residents here would be this Yong Tou Foo stall (01-145) that priced each Yong Tou Foo pieces at 15 cents, making it cheaply affordable for many.

And it is full sized pieces we are talking about here, not cut half-sized ones.

Just when everybody was complaining of high inflation months back, this stall drops their price from 15 cents per piece, minimum $2 to the now $1.50 order.

(Applause!)

Served in warm broth of Soybeans were our 10-piece selections with its aromatic Yam Rice, $2.
