唯一辣沙, Wei Yi Laksa & Prawn Noodle

3. Prawns, Cockles, Fried Bean Curd ($4)

Better late, than never.

This is a bowl of delicious laksa we have been missing. Came twice to the Tanglin Halt 48A Market  for early lunches, but always misses it as the stall closes early; right after selling out for breakfast. How’s laksa for breakfast? Too strong for me. Weird. Never.

Never say, never.

The laksa is great! I’m willing to have it for breakfast. And repeat for a second. All ingredients use is fresh tasting! and the broth of good flavor. I bet you can’t get this elsewhere on this island, seriously.

Their prawn noodle sold out early. We'll try again next time.

Swatow Wanton Noodle - since 1970

Wanton Noodle ($3)

No. This post isn't about Wanton noodle. Although the stall has been selling it for decades, it simply came across mediocre. The wow is on their Laksa.

Laksa ($3.50)

You know how, on some day you have a sudden craving for Laksa? A bowl of simple, but good and satisfying Laksa? Come down to the Fengshan Market & Food Centre, (#01-50). I believe you will be gratified by this bowl of curry broth, containing all the essential ingredients of a Laksa - cockles, taupok, fishcakes, beansprouts and prawns!

But the magic is in the broth. Never overly thick, with just the right amount of spiciness you could enjoy. We like this a lot. Now you see why the wanton noodle has been dwarfed.

水塘, Ah Gong Recipes since 1978

Ah Gong's Traditional Laksa (RM$8.90++, S$3)
Cheung Fun (RM$4.80++, S$1.60), Traditional Kopi (RM$2.70++, S$0.90)

Our walk around Johor Bahru City Square exposed us to many small, interesting eateries and thus we decided to drop our previous plan for a big meal, but instead to take a few snacks for our lunch.

Ah Gong Laksa attracted us with our love for laksa; and their cheapest offering of kopi in this entire shopping mall. Yes, do not think that everything across the causeway is cheaper than in Singapore. Consumer prices in Malaysia are constantly updated to keep pace with the falling ringgits.

The laksa was sufficiently enjoyable, albeit the missing cockles that were not available today. This is a good break before we continued our shopping.

Ci Yuan Community Club - the $2.80 Hawker Centre

#01-29 Traditional Pork Rib Prawn Noodle (Dry, or Soup $2.80)

We did came for the $2.80 dishes. Wanted to see the honesty of a $2.80 offering compared with our usual $2.50 and $3 in the neighborhood market. Our observations were of course, limited only to the stalls we tried on this page.

On serving size and generosity of ingredient, the $2.80 is clearly lacking behind $3. But it won by good recipe. Meaning the soup, sauce and seasoning that determine the success of a dish are expertly concocted. Ingredients are fresh but in smaller pieces. The $2.80 bowl doesn't fill you up. Many thus chose to 'up-size' their orders by paying more.

Still Ci Yuan Hawker Centre is worthy of repeats and exploration, where young entrepreneur hawkers are seen hard at work. Food choices are aplenty and tasty. The clean, airy and spacious dining hall doesn't leave you smelling like a kitchen. I fell for the place at once.

The food that we had tonight was above average, and totally enjoyable. You just need to order more.

#01-31 Leo Satay Cup Set (5 random sticks of Chicken & Pork + Ketupat + Cucumber & Pineapple Cuts, $2.80)

#01-14 Teochew Satay Bee Hoon ($3.50), Laksa ($2.80)

#01-18 JB Handmade Pau. Chwee Kueh (4 Pcs, $1) Chee Chong Fun ($1.50) Rice Dumpling ($1.80)

Geylang Laksa & Prawn Noodle

Upon reading this stall from Dr Tay at ieat, Ric says we drive down Sims Drive to 'eat wind' and noodles for breakfast :))

According to Dr Tay, the stall serves "old school" Laksa which he defines one that is "very fragrant but not overly spicy or overly rich such that you can down a whole bowl and not feel jelak. (bloated)". Well, that was exactly how it feels like. But because it doesn't bowl you over, you might simply register it as any typical bowl of good Laksa from your neighborhood hawker.

Ingredients are plentiful. Both for its Laksa and Prawn Mee. Lots of cockles and fresh prawns for the Laksa; even more prawns for the Prawn noodle! Between the 2, i actually enjoyed the light and flavorful prawn broth over the curry Laksa. You tell me?

BEST! Laksa Yong Tau Foo!

Laksa Yong Tau Foo ($3.50)

As if their star Chicken Chop Curry Noodle wasn't enough to steal the limelight of Hong Lim Market and Food Centre, Cantonese Delights have to mind-blow us with their very excellent Laksa Yong Tau Foo!

All ingredients were stuffed with fish paste and freshly deep fried, save for the fishball and soft beancurd. Given our lighter taste buds, we were surprised how utterly tasty is each of their plump pieces! None cloying at all. We would say it's very shiok!

Many were having extra side order of their braised chicken feet also. But we ARE hurrying back for their Laksa Yong Tau Foo - an entire bowl for myself. No more sharing!

Cantonese Delights!

There seems to be perpetual queuing at this corner noodle stall, #02-03 in the Hong Lim Market and Food Centre; as such we never get to try any of their good food with the weekday lunch crowd. Come Sunday morning at uptown, and we still have to queue!

Clueless as to what's on the menu (cos there are so much ingredients on display!), i try chat up their regular customers in the queue, and everyone points to their Wanton noodle and Chicken Chop Curry Mee for the safe bet. Their Yong Tau Foo selection, if you want to be explicit.

The Yong Tau Foo can wait. While we gave wide-eyed, silenced approval to their Chicken Chop Curry Mee. It served exceptional curry gravy with freshly deep fried chicken chop! I didn't want to convince you.

We are now so looking forward to their Laksa Yong Tau Foo!

汕源, San Yuan Gourmet - $2 Noodle Soup

Fishball Noodle, dry ($2)

Everybody's complaining about rising food prices. It is very true, that even buying raw ingredients from the market to do our own cooking is hurting mom's purse. Not mentioning, eating out at hawker centres where $3 is the norm for a simple meal - clear soup noodle.

How luxurious does one wants their fishball noodle? I just crave for a serving of lightly savory hot soup, fresh crunchy fishballs and al dente noodles - satisfying our unsophisticated needs at a 24hrs stall in Blk 409, Ang Mo Kio Ave 10, Teck Ghee Square hawker centre.

Remember their Laksa too, with loads of fresh cockles! and soft-boiled Tau Pok! Support! Support!

$2 Laksa !

Laksa ($2)

"I want a photo of this!" i exclaimed when Ric came back with the bowl of Laksa from our favourite Carrot Cake stall in North Bridge Rd Market.

Yeah, it's just a setup of a small Laksa cooking station inside the Carrot cake stall but we decidedly felt they deserve our support for offering such economic fare - and it turns out to be a bowl of real fine Laksa! The Laksa curry was of the right consistency, the Tau Pok had soaked up the flavorsome broth, generous serving of noodles and perfectly fresh Cockles!

6 little plump Cockles in all! Must support ok ;)

What has inflation done to the pricing of our hawker food? It's extremely rare to find nice $2 food nowadays... The $2 Prawn Noodle in the same market had upped their price to $2.50 but it's still very much worth the buy given its large serve portion.

Heng Kee Curry Noodle

Being a little early today, i could afford to join the 10 man queue at Hong Lim's Heng Kee (#01-1271), the most advocated Curry Chicken Noodle stall in Singapore!?

Curry Chicken Noodle ($4)

A few sips of its 'powerful' gravy and Mom surrendered. "You're gotten thirst after this bowl..." She warned.

Sure enough, she was right.

And we couldn't get across the constant popularity this stall enjoys throughout the year; being featured in Singapore Tour Guide Books was their other bonus.

Their minimum $4 serving portion would not do for an average male. And for juicer Chicken meat, i would vote for the nearby PingPing stall (level 2) anytime.

众人好 Laksa

Would you have Laksa for breakfast?
We did today, at Geylang Bahru Hawker Centre.

Laksa ($2)

This is weighty spicy stuff! Waking up your taste buds!

The broth, though pales in comparison to that of the Sungei Road Laksa, generous helping of Noodles, fresh Fishcake & Cockles more than make up for it :)

Lor Mee ($2)

As introduced on our previous visit; their Lor Mee is the best bet.

旺角,Wang's Cafe

Wang's Cafe at Plaza Singapura promises a complete meal at $3.90 with a choice of 1 bowl of noodles (Laksa, Mee Siam, Chicken Macaroni Soup, Fishball Noodles, Mee Rebus) and their Signature Kopi.

Comforting good old coffee, as it always has been...

The Laksa is as good as it looks :)

Half-boiled Egg ($1.50)

Cooked at just the right constant, Ric was tempted in ordering the half-boiled sunny yolk upon seeing them at the serving counter :) Wouldn't you be?

31 Sungei Road Laksa

Laksa ($2)

Sungei Road is probably famous for its Laksa; so many Laksa stalls are named after it.

We were at Ric's favourite stall in Seng Chuan Eating House, along 31 Kelantan Lane. Though we were put off by its location and untidiness of the environment, we were often lured here by the Laksa.

The Laksa here comes with fresh Cockles and Fish Cake only, unlike the fancier Katong Laksa version which comes with small Shrimp as well.

And we would have preferred the unpretentious presentation here.

Ping Ping Curry Noodle

There are 3 stall of Chicken Curry Noodles at Hong Lim Food Centre. Heng Kee on the ground floor is the most popular one, and there's Ah Heng the one directly above Heng Kee on level 2.

The original stall from Teochew Street however, is the one that signboard reads 潮州街,平平加哩面, #02-28.

You wouldn't see a queue here, their faithful followers simply place their order and it will be served.

Curry Noodles ($3)

I slurped up everything that was in it – Chicken, Fishcake, Tau Pok, Pig's Skin, Potato and mildly spiced curry soup. And this is just my 1st time at this stall.

The Curry is indeed very different from other Curry stalls. Most usually try all means to make the Curry as thick as possible, but not here at Ping Ping. It tasted lighter.

The soup is thus very easy and pleasant to drink on its own. I surprised myself that i actually like this concoction; less can actually be more! I'm yearning for it as i wrote.

Ping Ping thus offers a uniqueness in taste that's different to Heng Kee's, which is more like thick curry. Come no later than 2pm for a guarantee buy.
