Master Tang's Wanton Noodle, Bukit Batok

Wanton Noodle ($3.50)

Remember Master Tang from HK Crystal Jade Kitchen? The Hong Kong chef is now operating from a kopitiam at Blk 233, Bukit Batok East Ave 5.

The food is still as good, if not better. I love his wanton dumplings best. Here is our previous visit to their old outlet at Sixth Avenue, Bukit Timah. Our verdict stays.

Will definitely visit again; many times, as this new location is so much more convenient.

Swatow Wanton Noodle - since 1970

Wanton Noodle ($3)

No. This post isn't about Wanton noodle. Although the stall has been selling it for decades, it simply came across mediocre. The wow is on their Laksa.

Laksa ($3.50)

You know how, on some day you have a sudden craving for Laksa? A bowl of simple, but good and satisfying Laksa? Come down to the Fengshan Market & Food Centre, (#01-50). I believe you will be gratified by this bowl of curry broth, containing all the essential ingredients of a Laksa - cockles, taupok, fishcakes, beansprouts and prawns!

But the magic is in the broth. Never overly thick, with just the right amount of spiciness you could enjoy. We like this a lot. Now you see why the wanton noodle has been dwarfed.

Master Tang's Wanton Noodle

Sited in Kopitown Coffeeshop at 10E, Sixth Avenue Bukit Timah, a 82 year old hawker (Mr Tang Siu Nam) works steadily for his constant queue of customers. Many lured by his fame of being the man behind the signature Crystal Jade wanton mee.

And while a plate at the CJ restaurant had gone up to near $10 bucks, Mr Tang charges local hawker prices.

We have always loved CJ's wanton noodle - the al-dente springy egg noodle; big fat juicy dumplings full of shrimp and minced meat; not forgetting the iconic roasty Cantonese style sambal chili paste. Here, Mr Tang offers you the exact!

Tanjong Rhu Wanton Noodle (Since 1986)

Wanton Noodle ($3)

There are two good wanton noodle stalls here in the Jalan Batu Food Centre. Both used to operate consecutively at the adjacent block 7 Coffeeshop. And both wanton noodles are so similar! You would think the stall owners are related.

The one we are having today is the underdogs; while the other made famous by Chua Lam's (an eminent food critic from Hong Kong) visit is this stall. Which tastes better? We would clearly say it is this underdog.

The stall offers a variety of seasoning sauce - Chili, Ketchup, Plain, Black. We stick to our favorite Chili Ketchup. And it tastes of good old times. Ultra springy noodles, crunchy fried wanton and some better than average roasted pork. It's the noodles that won us over.

Ho Seng Kee, 何成記云吞面

Doesn't this picture sets you salivating? Hold it there, you've got to travel the distance to the Johor Bahru City Square for your fix.

Ho Seng Kee operates from the roof terrace of the shopping mall, bringing forth freshly made noodles daily, from duck, chicken eggs and high protein flour. Their noodle alone warrants a repeat visit; and you may well enjoy their prawn dumplings too.

正光, Hollywood Zhenguang Wanton Noodles

Wanton Noodle/ or Braised Chicken Feet Noodle ($3)

After all the hooha on the media about Zheng Guang's moving away from the closed down Hin Hollywood Canteen (located at the junction of Haig Road and Tanjong Katong Road), we just have to visit them at their new venue in Haig Road Market & Food Centre.

But the wanton mee was sold out; we were left with only the choice of braised chicken feet. Maybe we will return to catch their wanton noodle in the early morning, but maybe not. Because we weren't too impressed with the noodles today.

If like us, you came late for the wanton mee, we recommend you try out Kiat Huat who is just behind Zheng Guang's stall. We think you'll like them too.

Dunman Road Char Siew Wan Ton Mee, 德明叉烧云吞面

Wanton Mee ($3)

We found them in 2009, and the most recent visit was in 2012.

Today, the famous chili sauce looked a little watery from their usual recipe, but also less starchy. The stall owner, none too friendly when we shifted the plates on the serving tray. An oddball. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our noodle as much as we left it. It is still ultra spicy, having a good handmade noodle texture and notable dumplings.

This post serves as an update; and maybe our last mention of the stall. If you have never been there, you ought to.

吉发, Kiat Huat Wanton Noodle

First. We have to acknowledge the deliberate act of the hawker in keeping his customers waiting - his looking into the line constantly, taking a drink and checking into the fridge are obvious bid to building up the lunch hour queue... It is no surprise that the stall is the only queuing one at Haig Road Market & Food Centre.

But is the food good? Yes, it is. It is toothsome and does leave a lingering effect on me. I like the seasoning sauce, the al dente egg noodle, sweet roasted meat and the crunchy fresh fried dumpling. Many were having extra order of their deep fried prawn dumplings!

The long queue however, does turn away potential customers.

王老五 Chicken King - Boiled Soup, Wanton Mee. $2 Chicken Rice?

Chicken Rice ($2)

We came back to Jalan Batu Food Centre for their Hong Kong styled Wanton noodles - nicely barbecued Char Siew, meaty dumplings in Wolfberries soup and savory seasoning sauce; quite a steal at just $3. Then we saw their $2 chicken rice.

How do you like it from the pictures here? It certainly tastes as good, and this is plenty of meat for $2!

A large, colored notice by the side of the stall reads - 1st and 15th at 11am to 12pm of every month, there will be 150 FREE packets of Chicken Rice to the needy senior citizen customers. So this is also a stall with lot of hearts. Do come patronize them alright?

Ying Ji, 英记云吞面 - This is Char Siew!

Wanton Noodle ($2.50)

"Oh! My! This char siew is chewy! It's been so long since i tasted such delicious char siew, not even at those popular noodle stalls! This is real meat! Should roasted meat even be this chewy and juicy!?" i exclaimed sheepheadedly. "Yay, this is how they always serve it." Ric remaining cool.

So this little-known stall becomes our favorite, the very first one which i would gladly finish up all my Char Siew; snooping around for extras from other plates. It is this good. They are at Taman Jurong Market Food Centre; stall no. 03-172.

Order the $3 bowl at your own risk; unless you have a really big appetite!

葉记, Yap Kee Wanton Mee - Egg Noodle?

Wanton Mee ($3)

We love wanton noodle. Tell us there's one good stall, we'll go. And if it's yet to be, we would just be making 1 wasted trip rather than spend time guessing. This breakfast, we came by the famous Yap Kee Noodles in Holland Drive Food Centre.

Some netizens had candidly pointed out that only their egg noodles are noteworthy; the rest are just mediocre. But we though the seasoning sauce is great; a whiff of nostalgia just transported me back to my old childhood market stall! Other than this... we are pretty sure the hawker needs better control of his noodle cooking technique - the good noodles were wasted as they stick awkwardly together, failing to achieve a toothy and springy texture.

No queue at the stall; you could easily drop in to give a verdict of your own.

佳记, Dover Road Kai Kee Wanton Noodle

Wanton Mee, dry ($2.50)

At a place like Alexandra Village Food Centre where good food abounds, it's easy to miss out the good stuffs. Kai Kee here serves a luscious fare of local Wanton noodle with handmade noodle textures of the proud Fei Fei's!

If you do not wish to travel all the way to Joo Chiat for Fei Fei's and pay their much inflated prices, give Kai Kee a chance here. No regret.

BEST! Laksa Yong Tau Foo!

Laksa Yong Tau Foo ($3.50)

As if their star Chicken Chop Curry Noodle wasn't enough to steal the limelight of Hong Lim Market and Food Centre, Cantonese Delights have to mind-blow us with their very excellent Laksa Yong Tau Foo!

All ingredients were stuffed with fish paste and freshly deep fried, save for the fishball and soft beancurd. Given our lighter taste buds, we were surprised how utterly tasty is each of their plump pieces! None cloying at all. We would say it's very shiok!

Many were having extra side order of their braised chicken feet also. But we ARE hurrying back for their Laksa Yong Tau Foo - an entire bowl for myself. No more sharing!

Cantonese Delights!

There seems to be perpetual queuing at this corner noodle stall, #02-03 in the Hong Lim Market and Food Centre; as such we never get to try any of their good food with the weekday lunch crowd. Come Sunday morning at uptown, and we still have to queue!

Clueless as to what's on the menu (cos there are so much ingredients on display!), i try chat up their regular customers in the queue, and everyone points to their Wanton noodle and Chicken Chop Curry Mee for the safe bet. Their Yong Tau Foo selection, if you want to be explicit.

The Yong Tau Foo can wait. While we gave wide-eyed, silenced approval to their Chicken Chop Curry Mee. It served exceptional curry gravy with freshly deep fried chicken chop! I didn't want to convince you.

We are now so looking forward to their Laksa Yong Tau Foo!

金记, Kim Kee (Coffee Shop) Tanjong Rhu Wanton Mee

Wanton Mee ($2.50)

For the longest time, this familiar wanton noodle stall operates under Blk 7 of Kampong Kayu Rd with the ever famous Tanjong Rhu Pau. Now the noodle stall decided to move into the adjacent Jalan Batu Food Centre; which is a good thing - for more seating spaces.

Operating hours are limited at 0630-1400hrs and closed on Sun; noodles selling out at 1pm, do visit the stall early to avoid disappointment.

I do ponder over their appeal to attract a faithful following; customers who form a short queue in front of the stall, ordering big $3 serving as i tuck into the ordinary-looking bowl of wanton noodle... Maybe it's the 'taste of old times', i reckoned.

The tomato sauce mix with a little chili is comfortably simple yet inviting; springy chewy noodles; thin skinned wantons with fairly average BBQ pork - it doesn't warrant travelling long distances for this; but if you are nearby or is a Wanton mee aficionado, this is quite a warm old-fashioned treat for the soul.

大成, Tai Seng Noodle House

Mushroom Pork Rib Noodle ($4)

Wouldn't you be intimidated by such large food serving!? How to eat? Yeah, how to eat...

It has been 5 long years since our last visit to this stall #02-123 at Amoy Street Food Centre and their generous serving portion still left us amazed!

Have your fill with the many pieces of soft chunky pork ribs. Also, you shall surely appreciate their firm, dense piece of fried, braised bean curd; never mind you are carnivore by nature, you wouldn't complain.

And each noodle set comes with 7 meat dumplings in soup. How to finish!? Yeah, how to finish...

Cha Shao Yuton Noodle ($3)

I'm no serious carnivore, so too much pork rib doesn't interests me. I prefer their wanton noodle with absolutely tasty barbecued red meat (char siew) and fresh crispy fried dumplings! Now, if only i could have one braised bean curd from Ric's plate...

We did clear our plate and left feeling bloated. And really thirsty; caused by the food MSG. But this maybe one stall which we forgive their MSG cooking - the food really tastes good.
