Changi Village Food Centre

Standard Chicken Wings Set ($3.50, add $1.50 for Fried Ikan Kuning)

Changi Village has always been associated with nasi lemak. There are several good stalls here, and they are famous for their aromatic steamed rice and freshly deep fried chicken wings. It is really quite irresistible for many. The one we have today is from Changi Famous Nasi Lemak (#01-28). But my recent favourite is the homely, fresh tasting one from Orang Orang, in Bukit Batok.

Now, don't forget the iconic 'Commando dessert'. Made famous by our Commando soldiers at the nearby Hendo camp, who love to come by and order it for the whole table! Nearly every dessert stalls here serve it, and this dessert is unique to Changi Village only.

Red Tea Jelly with Longan, the "Commando Dessert" ($2)

You may wish to skip the soggy fried Hokkien mee we had. Curb whatever your cravings. Order instead a plate of savory fried kway tiao, or the well charred Chinese rojak with zesty lime juice in its dressing! You would thank me for it.

For more eats from the Changi Village, please type in 'Changi Village Food Centre' in the search box located at the right column of this blog. Eat your way out :)

风盛, Fong Seng Fried Kway Teow

Char Kway Teow ($2.50)

Arriving at 163, Bukit Merah Central Food Centre, one would be swept away by the aroma from Fong Seng hot frying wok. We walked around the food centre, but found nothing more desirable - guess we already got baited at Fong Seng.

Both of us wanted the fried kway teow, and trusted the old hawker enough to order 2 individual serving. Alas, the small portion on the large plate was disappointing at first sight. The taste was surprisingly mediocre. We left scratching our heads.

Pig Out @ Pasir Panjang Food Centre!

Hotplate Stingray ($10)

"What do you say we have our next meet up in a hawker centre?" Everyone is hands and legs up in agreement, for decent pricing and good food is a guarantee in Singapore's hawker centre.

Alas, these guys didn't mean to scrimp. Just look at the food they ordered for the 4 of us - BBQ seafood from 新福记 (Xin Fu Ji), fried Hokkien mee from Seng Huat, fried kway tiao from Heng Huat, BBQ rojak from the Fruit Rojak and BBQ chicken wings from 216 Choa Chu Kang! And possibly some fat, juicy satay from Yusoff Haji Jalal if only it was opened today.

Fresh sugarcane drinks and ice-chilled beer at hand, we had a hearty get-together at the Pasir Panjang Food Centre.

海记, Hai Kee Teochew Char Kway Teow

Teochew Fried Kway Teow ($3)

I've never blogged about Hai Kee!? Didn't realize that! We had known him since his time at the old Margaret Food Centre. Made famous by his $2 plate of moist fried kway teow which usually consist of 20 odd cockles; a type of seawater clams. Customers would line up outside his stall even before he opens.

Tonight, we just decide to join the slow queue at his relocated stall in the Telok Blangah Crescent Market and Food Centre, where he still fry his noodle, one plate at a time.

It is undoubtedly lip-smacking good, albeit the MSG. And having 25 cockles in one serving plate means getting to enjoy every mouthful of small, fresh clams meat! For this, we queue!

Lucy's Penang Delights

For the smallness of Singapore, it's always amazing to discover places i've never been before - like the Geylang East Food Centre at 117 Aljunied Ave 2. Some shops in this neighborhood are clearly old school and i had loved to visit them in the future.

And there's several promising food stalls in the food centre!

Penang Kolok Mee, or Wanton Noodle ($2.50)

Penang Delights is one such that caught our attention as i spotted one lady slurping in noodles that swim in dark black sauce! Thought we got to try that!?

But i was rather taken aback by the strong hint of Nutmeg in the sauce and was fighting hard to stomach it; their regular customers clearly adore it. Nutmeg and Ampulla (or better known as balonglong fruit) are both Penang's specialty, and the stall does offer them as healthy fresh drinks on their menu. Quite fascinating. But i dare not try. Anyone?

Penang Char Kuay Teow ($3)

Now now, the fried noodle is one sure bid.

We heard the hawker choking with kitchen fumes before coming up with a plate of soft and nicely burned rice noodles, flavored by crunchy pork lard. Tasted really good but it's hard to feel gratify for the small serving size.

Armenian Street Fried Kway Teow

Char Kway Teow ($3)

Ordinary looking Char Kway Teow?

Not when you know the history behind this little stall - they are the long lost fried kway teow from the old National Library; now found in a coffeeshop at 303 Anchorvale Link. This bait sure bites.

The son of the original stallowner had took over the stall, cooking up a wok of slightly dry kway teow with a good aroma of 'wok hei'! Ric loves it. "It gave you a satisfying aftertaste." He said. And i do agree, and that alone sells.

Else be tempted by their many plump cockles and crispy bits of pork lard in the noodle.

章发, Zhang Fa Char Kway Teow

Fried Kway Teow ($2.50)

The music of steel spatula working the wok enthusiastically was clearly audible throughout the Tanglin Halt Food Centre whenever we dine here. Today, we witnessed what was the dins about - a scrumptious plate of Char Kway Teow.

I could still vividly relish on how the ultra soft yet unbreakable kway teow rice noodle fought the chopsticks to feed my eager palates. Yummm..!

The littlest plate we shared was just enough for snacking though; with hawkers maintaining their prices but reducing food serving. Sinful food becomes less unhealthy when you consume in small portion?

Outram Fried Kway Teow Mee

Hong Lim Market and Food Centre is undergoing renovation for upgrading works.

Most of the food stalls are operating from the makeshift area set up besides the Kreta Ayer Neighbourhood Police Post.

At this late hour of 2pm, many stalls had closed.

Sometimes, this makes deciding what to eat simple ;) Just order from whichever stalls you know is popular.

Fried Kway Teow Mee, black ($2.50)

Here, you could request for the white version of Fried Kway Teow, which i saw some ordering.

Standard of cooking is consistent with old uncle at helm. Wet, moist and flavorful with plenty of Pork Lard and Cockles.

This can certainly be one of the better Char Kway Teow stalls around.

Tiong Bahru Fried Kway Teow

Fried Kway Teow ($2)

Looks can be deceiving indeed... this plainly light-colored plate of Fried Kway Teow was not an appetizing looker, but its taste was overwhelmingly satisfying - with a tang of "Wok Hei"!

At Tiong Bahru Market, stall 02-11 you would find this old stall that's been operating since the time of the former old Tiong Bahru Market.

I especially loves its fresh, small Cockles used, all 7 of them in my little plateful. Great calorific treat!

Hong Lim Food Centre

Yes, we may be crazy but you have to pardon someone who has just returned from overseas for ordering so much food for 2 persons.

We were so bloated that home dinner was beyond us :)

Outram Park Char Kway Teow ($2.50)

Despite the slight price increase from $2, the works was all worth it. Fresh cockles, i love them, if only there's more pieces of Pork Lard :)

大华 Minced Pork Noodles ($3)

Average sauce mix that was heavy on Vinegar, otherwise it could be a more enjoyable fare. Thumbs up for its beautiful slices of Pig's liver and tasty accompanied seaweed soup.

基记 Jiji Wanton Noodle ($2.50)

All the wows and publicity on their wanton mee, i would say the difference was only in the seasoning sauces used for the noodle mix. Not too bad though, as we could see their regulars ordering larger plates of $3.
Value for money and taste would still be the one at Amoy Street. The queue there is anytime longer than the one here :)

德记 Tuck Kee Hor Fun ($5)

Priced at $5 for the minimum potion, it's still a superb dish of Ipoh Hor Fan, really fresh prawns and crayfish for the works. The thick gravy is light, not salty at all and gives a smooth, savory flavor to the dish - magic.

It's been a long time since our last visit at Hong Lim, even our favourite Cuppage Plaza Braised Duck Rice stall had moved away. Wonder where :(

ABC Brickworks Market & Food Centre

Headed to Bukit Merah for dinner with my usual fare of the well-known Teochew Cuttlefish with Kang gong greens.

Had craving tonight for some soup based item as my snacking on potato chips this afternoon had left me feeling so dry. So this sliced fish soup noodles. Nice crystal shine, chewy noodles.

A surprise find tonight is this Penang style Char Kway Teow, the flat noodles were fried like Thailand Pad Thai noodles. Yummy.

It's been such a long 2 weeks of busy work week with many changes and unpleasant surprises that really left me stressed and drained physically.

All's well that ends well. A good pigging out and unwinding really gave me my best night sleep of these 2 weeks... Zzzzzz... ...
