Sansevieria trifasciata Golden Hahnii

Sansevieria trifasciata Golden Hahnii

A dwarf cultivar of the familiar houseplant Sansevieria trifasciata (Mother-in-laws tongue), the 'Golden Hahnii' is much mini sized and has thicker leaves. When well fertilized, its thick luscious leaves are glossy and beautiful.

Preferably with full sun, the plant does tolerate low light conditions. Requires little water, and is very drought tolerant. I did cause some leaves rot when I kept it moist all time.

Today's the end of yet another year. Amid all the running about; the distractions and exhaustion, gardening always bring me back to the fundamental truth. And peace.

The Istana - Home to Rain Trees and LKY

Snaking queues for security checks at the Main Gate

This is our first visit to The Istana - the official residence and office of the President of Singapore, also the working office of the Prime Minister of Singapore. Singaporeans will forever remember our aching hearts when a gun carriage conveyed Mr Lee Kuan Yew's body from the Istana to Parliament House on Wed, March 25. That was the last time he is leaving the office he had worked all his life for this little red dot.

So when chances come for members of the public to register for SAF50@Istana, organised by the Singapore Armed Forces, i jumped on it. I want to see the ground the great man walked.

Singapore Crest on the Main Gate

Benches fabricated from timber planks recycled from the former National Stadium, as part of URA’s project to commemorate the national icon. For more information, visit http://ura.sg/pickabench

Visitors for the day took part in interactive games and activities, including flight simulators. Kids have fun with bouncy castles, face painting and have their photo taken with little SAF uniforms! While i enjoyed browsing through SAF artifacts on display and exhibits highlighting the SAF's contributions and capabilities, including stories of how past servicemen and women built the forces. Performances by the SAF Band and the Music and Drama Company kept us spirited.

Now i just wish children can be gentle to the badly scraped benches, designed and fabricated from timber planks recycled from our former National Stadium.

The Swan Pond - largest among the 4 ponds in the Istana grounds. So called because of the swans which inhabited it
in the 1970s, it lies at two levels with an island in the midst of the main body.

Rain Trees lining both sides of Edinburgh Road shade the half-kilometre walk from the Main Gate to the Centre Gate.

Lastly, let me share this tribute song for Mr LKY... named '1965', the year of Singapore's independence. He had left us for four months now, but the feeling is still raw. Thank you, Mr Lee our nation's dad.

28th SEA Games Singapore

Traditional Dragon Boat Race Event at the Marina Bay

After a spectacular opening ceremony to the 28th South East Asian Games on 5 June, 2 weeks of exciting games followed! We were trying to catch as many sports action as we could, over the night hours.

Winning games and medals bind the people together as we cheered on Team Singapore - after all it is our 50th year of independence, and the year beloved statesman, Mr Lee Kuan Yew departed. National pride seems at its highest; even failures were cheered. Lauding 84 gold medals, and 259 in all, threw the nation in jubilation - their best performance so far in SEA games. It is a memorable 2 weeks.

Maybe this little red dot has finally found its feet. Maybe these people of diverse language, race and religion are finally coming together. Maybe Singapore can survive as a nation after all. Let's pray we stay this rugged.

The Awakening - LKY

Aranda Lee Kuan Yew - A Singapore Botanic Gardens orchid hybrid named in honour of Mr Lee Kuan Yew,
former Prime Minister and Minister Mentor of Singapore.

Thunderstorm, rain and strong winds swirl the tiny island. I couldn't recall when we last experienced this degree of frightful weather. Next day, a typical Monday morning, breaking news of the passing of Singapore's first prime minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew came.

The media was quick to release old videos and speeches of our once vigorous prime minister - he canvassing for votes, debating on government policies, chiding and correcting us like we were ignorant children. We recalled his unfriendly speeches, and harsh lectures. By and large, he does no music for our ears. We remembered clearly.

Strangely, we are really missing him now. Laughing and sobbing at these old memories that came flooding back. Realizing, he is now no more.

Like most Singaporeans, we are pragmatic, shy and acting cool. Nobody discuss our grieve openly, but you sense it in the unusual silence of the workplace and neighborhood. We carried on our day work; quietly planning around our schedule, so we could visit the laying in states when the Parliament House opens to public mourning on Wednesday.

The Parliament House, lighted up with people in queue, under tentage.

Many interviewed confessed their restlessness till respects have been paid at the Parliament House. I then realized, i'm not the only one. Clearly not. Multitude queued through hot day and dark night to enter the Parliament House. Public response was overwhelming!

Everyone grew anxious by now, discussing when was the best time to go down and how our office does not get affected. We had to defer our visit till Friday morning, just a day before the end of public mourning. It was sleepless in Singapore this week.

Arriving at 5am, Friday. We were taken aback by a bustling Central Business Distinct - hurrying pedestrians, heavy traffic and long car queue outside various car parks displaying the "Full" sign! No. It was not a scene of disorder and chaos. On the contrary, i was struck by an air of solemn. I have never seen a crowd this large, yet this quiet.

Hurrying pedestrians gave way to drivers who waved back with a smile. Patient drivers waited in line of the parking queue, nobody horned at anybody. Everyone is here for a common cause. I feel my eyes welling up. The stirring emotion of standing around here is beyond words.

Anyone who has been here, understand what I am talking about. We are a nation united; like never before. Living in an era of comfort and riches, our desire to stay together has never been this intense. We would have made Mr Lee very proud. If only he could see us.

Are Singaporeans muddled? They forgot the ISA detainees who were jailed and suffered? They are not aware of the history of Operation Cold Store? They enjoy living in high costs Singapore? What about free press? Human rights?

I would say Singaporeans are a fortunate lot who traveled widely. And books published by ex-ISA detainees are readily available on the internet. Socio-political activists and groups freely curse and condemn the government, on the internet and at the Speakers' Corner; mixing truth with half-truths. We had had enough.

Mr Lee Kuan Yew is a blessing to Singapore, to us. No one shall discredit him. He did his best, given the circumstances. And his best is enough for us. We would not have wished things to happen otherwise.

Thank you, Mr Lee.
For making us a nation of proud Singaporeans.

We know you didn't need all this sentimentality about your passing - all this overnight queuing at the Padang field to pay our last respects to you. You resisted the cult of personality too. We are getting back to work. We are reading up your books. We will look after Singapore.

R.I.P Mr Lee.

A LINE Characters Valentine's Day

McDonald's Forever Love Special Edition Box  (S$19.80; available with purchase of an Extra Value Meal™)

Ric left office without lunch, rushing to queue for McDonald's limited release of LINE Valentine's Day plushies - BROWN and CORNY. We both thought they are cute.

The animation of couple bear and rabbit are sweet and candid; even when they are in disagreement! Just as very different individuals who come together, we fought so much too. The cartoon illustrates our love relationship playfully and explicitly - we quarrel, we fought but staying very much in love...

Happy Valentine's Day, BROWN!
CORNY loves you too. Hehehe...

42km Night Bike!

God knows how i made that trip back.

It was a challenge i made to myself, probably like a symbolic rite of passage of maturity - to complete the planned route of 42km, to and fro, the Big Splash and Changi Village Hawker Centre where we'll have our dinner.

The strong night winds, darken paths, the silent night, riding on a consistent terrain - it was all vividly memorable. All by myself. With a bum that hurts for 3 days after.

God knows how i made that return trip. Every paddle is earned, and I just knew I had to keep going... To complete the course is satisfyingly priceless, especially when it was one that i dropped from some 17 years ago.

The tiring uphill and smooth ride down reminds me of life's ups and down - a struggling uphill will surely led to a swift downhill! I am running the race, and trying to keep the faith.

Last day of 2012.

IKEA square pillar candle with ceramic base, 4-wick

I have a thing for candles, ever since i knew how to strike a match.

On this last day of 2012, the evening skies continue to ticker and we called off our planned outing for the fireworks countdown. Settled in for a simple dinner, winding down the night with sweet Japanese Choya, Rocher chocolates and my treasured candle block, in the shadowed and cooling garden.

Goodbye 2012. Hello 2013.
Growing older has made me more assured and sure of myself. Contented and less afraid of things to come. These are the best things that comes with age. Cheers!

Thank you, God.

Demise of Ah Mah

An unusual phone call from Aunt Wendy left me silenced. Grandma had passed away in the morning - the morning while everything has been as predictable as every work day when i woke and prepared for work.

The days of funeral wake proceeding to the cremation were busy and tiring, especially for those who stayed through the nights and those who woke up early. The bustling activities help kept us from grieving too much.

During these time, we reminisces our time with grandma, her smiles, her frowns. Her doting ways, often kind considerations for others, hospitable gestures and undemanding lifestyle. Her strong personalities that was muted by years of being a stroke patient.

Food she enjoyed. But more importantly, it was our company that she loves whenever we visit.

1. Salty green beans Ang Ku Kueh from the Ang Mo Kio Nonya Kueh at Hougang,
2. Big Chwee Kueh at Pek Kio Food Centre (no longer in operation, lost their contact too),
3. Bamboo Shoots Soon Kueh at Poh Cheu, Bukit Merah,
4. Our shared love for Chives Kueh at Toa Payoh 93 Kueh, Geylang Bahru Hawker Centre,
5. Cheese Cake from Japan Fiesta
6. Cupcakes from Katong Sin Chew. And i believe she would have enjoyed their Kaya Pandan Cake if I had managed to buy them for her.
7. Fried Five Spice items from Lao Zhong Zhong Ngoh Hiang Five Spice and some sweet roast duck from Hong Kong Roast, Bukit Batok.

Grandma is a food gourmet and held some respectable food philosophy; always serving us her best from the kitchen, endeavoring to feed her guests well. She was equally disappointed when her hands grew too weak to handle the spatula in her later years.

The morning (yesterday) before her cremation day, i woke to find my adopted plant flowering. As a mature plant, it had stubbornly refused to for so many years.

Now she had; Forget-Me-Not.

Saving Gaia - Our Home

Home (2009 film) - a 10mins Trailer

Watching a near 2hrs documentary of 家园,  Home (2009 film) in my air-conditioned room; made every breath of cool air, guilty. And the heart burdened with knowledge that humanity is seriously threatening the ecological balance of the planet earth. Humanity - Me & You.

Saving Gaia, A MediaCorp Green Initiative, 2012

Sure it takes more than singing a song to revert the damages we had inflict on the earth, but it is a timely campaign and reminder to us all. That in the pursue of our individual wants and ambitions, we need to slower our paces, give a second thought to better management of our environment and resources.

Conserve our natural resources wherever possible. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Starting with ourselves; our habits and actions. Be a responsible consumer. Think about what we buy?

And educate our young generations by playing the complete movie for them. The future belongs to them.

鳳飛飛 - Strong lady with the sweetest voice.

Her demise came as a rude shock via my facebook update last evening.
But i do not think i would cry for any unrelated stranger; was looking out for the night News broadcast.

This morning, in my rare instance, i tuned to all the Chinese FM stations as i yield to hear her voice - a voice who accompanied my tender childhood. I finally caught traces of her "敲敲门"; a cheerful song but i had a rush of sadness.

Lunch time. "今宵多珍重" was playing on my office PC and tears welled up in my eyes.

__郭蘅祈(郭子)

A definitely courageous lady who survived her husband and younger brother who both died of cancer in 2009 and 2006 respectively. She had supported them both and held herself till 3 Jan this year; all the while humble and low-key, not emphasizing to the public of her illness - lung cancer.

Somehow, Whitney Houston's passing on after years of drug and alcohol abuses doesn't seem so deserving of our empathy and grief now..

Veteran Taiwanese singer, Fong Fei Fei,
My applause has always been for you.
And you know our love is always with you - on our saddest Valentine's day.

I'll Have to Say I Love You on a Cake

But it was more than that, i don't even have the courage to draw a "heart" for Ric on our birthday cake as we took up the Design-It-Yourself, DIY cake at the Icing Room; in full view of the public!

Still, it was really great fun!!!

My Design for Ric: "Pooh Bear always with Me"

Being just a day apart, we always celebrate our birthdays together :D

A month back, i chanced upon a promotion for the DIY 6"inch Cake Combo at $13.90 from Groupon; kept the purchase from Ric and meant it as a surprise, planning we could each design half the cake for each other! But be warned that macho guys don't fancy such public display of affection; Ric took it up only after some nudging and my 'lips pouting' protest.

This was my theme (i thought of it just the night before) for Ric's part of the cake - Pooh Bear. Cos he had always been my comforting, lovey Pooh Bear with a pouching tummy for hugs ;)

Ric Design for Me: "Doggie in Blissful Garden"

Being a passive big guy, Ric remarkably drew hearts, flowers and dotted his designed garden with colorful blooms; selecting the puppy icing figurine for me and sang a loud birthday song addressing me as his "dearest Dada". Haha...

Blackforest Cake

Our jointly design cake took 30 mins to complete and was like our labour of love, tasting especially great :)

When at the Icing Room, remember to ask for Chocolate and Red colored piping bags from the design desk, because they aid your design composition and is especially delicious for cake toppings.

Much to Ric's horror though, i'm so looking forward to another occasion to doing more cake design... i've got such inspirations after our first try today! You know we could have more colors here and ... ... ...Heh!

Who will be my President.

Dr Tony's supporter says, "Just wait and see, the result will be Tony. He's most respectable in every aspect." Mr Jee Say's supporter says, "We want an outspoken President to keep the Govt awake!"
Dr Cheng Bock's says, "He seems the most neutral candidate, man of our background and dares to speak his mind." I had none from Mr Kin Lian's yet.

Some sway voters say, "Anybody. All's a waste of time." But still, many Singaporeans remain excited after their first taste of excising democratic rights in our last island wide General Election - experiencing the meaning that voting is sacred.

Unanimously, everybody agreed that Mrs Tony Tan would made the most gracious First Lady.

Since the last GE, i learnt to value the 1 vote i have. Reading up, surfing the internet, talking to people. I want to make a clear choice and make my vote count. That's when i came across this video of Dr Tan's singing; no matter who you root for, this video is cool.

Have you decide on your vote for tomorrow?
I'm still contemplating between 2 of the candidates..

Potong Pasir, and it's Not a Slum

The iconic pitched roof HDB flat in Potong Pasir

It was after a light afternoon shower when we arrived at Potong Pasir Town; my very first visit here, would you believe it? though Singapore is really small.

What draw my attention to visit the place was firstly, to verify if this place is really a slum, as someone from Singapore's ruling party, the PAP often mocked during the election campaign.

Secondly, to take some memorable photos of this quiet village before the ruling party, who had won the constituency after 27 years of trying, turns it into an exhibit of their efficient governs.

Potong Pasir Town Council Office

We dined, walked about the little estate and were clearly overwhelmed by the cleanliness of the place! Either the town cleaners had been super effective or the people of Potong Pasir simply loves their home too much to litter it!

Everywhere we looked was clear of litters - the roads, the canal, the coffeeshops, the void decks, the gardens, the bus stops. Astonishing!

Yes, facilities and amenities were old but we could see the extra efforts that had went into keeping them clean and functional. With funds from the government, some minor upgrading of the place would be appreciated.

But for now, i could rationale with Mr Chiam See Tong proud acclaimed "My Kind of Town." A rustic neighbourhood where you could call home.

Now, which scumbag called this place a slum!?

Aljunied People - We Are Proud of You.

George, we LOVE YOU but Singapore must go on. You have been a people loving Minister and had accomplished the arduous task as our Foreign Minister; just the wrong place, wrong time. The GRC system is a force-feed and a double edged sword, cutting both ways.

And in all fairness, the Workers' Party deserves tomorrow's front page for marking a turning point in Singapore's political history! At 2am in the morning, my western neighbourhood cheers for Aljunied at the release of the good news - like a World Cup scoring! I could say the sleepless island was elated!

Mr Low & Ms Sylvia Lim, 加油!You have come a long long way.

Mr Chiam, we salute and thank you.
The national estate upgrading campaign had been most unfair to Potong Pasir and Hougang, now we wished the best, the very best for you all there! Hope you enjoy your long overdue amenities!

Mr Sitoh, that's the spirit now, not that of handing out shark fins soup.
PAP, revamp and move on!

This GE2011, the people of Singapore have spoke bravely.

The Sunday Times dated 8 May 2011, on morning of post election.

What i doing on Cooling-Off Day :)

So what have you been doing on our 1st Cooling-Off Day?

Talking politics leh...? Same here, with friends, families and colleagues in every office we visited - no one seems to be cooling off, all heated up, haha...

Worker' Party Singapore Pledge Taking on 5 May 2010, Serangoon Stadium.

This morning, however, i was tears by the emotive pledge taking on YouTube, "... to build a democratic society, based on justice and equality..."

4 May 2011, MrBrownShow: The Stall Next Door

Then laughing off watching the latest video from Mr Brown Show and trying to recap the James Gomez Incident May 2006 - the Bak Chor Mee Man! and Bak Chor Mee Man 2 on Ministerial salaries hikes...

It bring back all the "said but forgotten words"; talks about forgetful voters, i'm one. Hope you are not. Tomorrow's Polling Day. All the Best, Singapore.

Margaret River, 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon

Willespie Margaret River, Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml

A product of Western Australia and could probably be one that was bought at a bargain; i found it in my home - for your interest, it is spicy and dry.

But you know, a wine is a wine. It does its job when all you want is some bitterness to drown off life's boredom, frustrations, disappointment... Thank God for the beautiful chill evening that drizzles lightly, and a drinking companion; offering us the temporary escapement and comfort..

May the wine's bitterness wake us from our growing numbness... Cheers.

Gifts Selection...

Ric and i, we don't insist on preparing presents for each other on Anniversaries, Birthdays or the Festive, unless it so coincide that something caught our eyes then.

Ric saw an Esprit bag last week which i deny the buy as it was a normal priced item. "Unless there's a discount, else please don't get it." i was adamant.

This evening, Ric surprised me with a similar, or i could say a much befitting bag for me! Also from Esprit, but at a 50% discount ;)) He had saw the bag while Christmas shopping for his nieces and nephews the afternoon. Yeah, i love my new roomy huggable bag!

A credit to Ric, he's always there for my shopping of any sorts! Carefully considering its fashions, cuts, value and practicality. He helps me dress better; feels better about myself ;)

Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands

It's been such a busy year end for Ric that we could hardly afford the energy and time to take a leave from work. Thanks to a dinner invite from the Kees tonight, we were "forced" to retreat downtown for a rejuvenating night out at Marina Bay Sands.

At the Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, i was quite stupefied by the extensiveness in the gathering of most, if not all renowned world luxury brands here. It could indeed be THE most premier, luxury retail experiences you could get in Singapore.

"This place makes you feel $ poor, yet ambitious for more." i said to Ric. Totally in consistent with the spirit of Casinos. And what a revelation it has to lifestyle-simple Singaporean - an insight to the class of the world more affluent.

I shall leave their website will tell you more.
