Deanna's Kitchen Halal Prawn Mee

Big Prawn Noodle ($6.50), wet tissue included.

The power of social media; drew us to Deanna's Kitchen in Toa Payoh West Market and Food Centre. Then it dawns on me that authentic Hokkien prawn noodles can't do without pork...

But to my Muslim friends out there, this really comes close to what we have. In fact, this halal rendition of the Chinese prawn noodle tastes better than many average Chinese stalls. You gotta try it.

For the diehards, we have to look elsewhere for soup broth that comes with the good old, pork bone flavor.

Ah Hui Big Prawn Noodle @ Balestier Rd

Big Prawn Noodle (Standard, $12)

This is Ah Hui Big Prawn Noodle from the old Long House food centre at Thomson. Despite our many visits to the old Long House, they were always for the famous boneless braised duck rice. And it's not hard to understand why, after our taste of the prawn noodle today.

For the higher prices charged here, we expected more. Their standard prawn noodles at $5-7 does not offer sweet prawns. The big prawns at $12 are tastier, but not exceptional. The gentle broth left us wanting, since we are expecting a much robust sip.

On a kinder note, the prawns are definitely fresh and properly de-veined, making it easy to eat. The fresh fried shallots and pork lard bits are good effort.

Albert Street Big Prawn Noodle (亚峇街大虾面)

Big Prawn Noodle ($5, foreground)

We did some reading before coming down, because there are 2 famous prawn noodle stalls in the Old Airport Road Food Centre - the Whitley Rd BPN, and the Albert Street BPN. You see that we decide on Albert. And it was said that Albert started out in 1963!

As with all famous prawn noodle stalls, the pork ribs here are flavorsome and well done. I finished mine without having to give any away. And it is worth to pay a premium of 3 dollars more for the firm, sweet and bouncier meat of their green tiger prawns. Like us, you can taste the difference between the 2 bowls of prawns.

The soup is alright. It is concentrated but somehow lacked that wonderful umami kick that we craved.

宏记, Hong Ji Big Prawn Noodle

Prawn Noodle, soup ($3)

Better known for their claypot Bak Kut Teh, Hong Ji operates a prawn noodle stall side-by-side to their popular stall at Blk 19, Marsling Lane, which we shall try at a later date. Today, it was just a nominal fare of some warm noodle soup.

Without much expectation, we were well pleased with the MSG-free prawn soup. It tastes natural, without being overly sweet too. Very fresh prawns, plenty of Kanggong vegetable and beansprouts. This is quite good.

进春, Chin Choon Prawn Noodle

Prawn Noodle Soup, add Pig's Tail ($4, +$2)

Sited in an eating house at 826 Upper Bukit TImah RoadChin Choon prawn noodle doesn't taste like our usual prawn noodle with chili sauce, theirs are toss in dark soy sauce instead. The soup is also on a sweet note, and lesser the prawny dizziness that often took our breaths away. This is Malaysia-styled prawn mee.

The ingredients are decent though. But i thought we wouldn't travel all the way westward for this. We are more accustomed to Singapore-styled prawn mee.

Three Bowls, 三碗

Pork Tail Noodle, Soup ($4), Prawn Noodle, Soup ($3)

Apparently, the name 三碗 meant serving 3 types of ingredients with their noodles - prawn noodle/ pork rib noodle/ and pork tail noodle. I opted for their pig's tail noodle which includes prawns too. The pig's tail was a melt in the mouth and the soup was comforting.

This is Monday lunch at the Marsiling Lane Market & Cooked Food Centre. A mediocre bowl of  prawn soup noodle, but ultra satisfying to jump start the afternoon.

Noo Cheng Adam Road Prawn Noodle!

This was our first visit to Noo Cheng Adam Road Prawn Noodle at the Zion Riverside Food Centre. And we seemed to have found our best prawn mee in Singapore - the soup was amazing, the pork ribs were falling off the bones and the $8 bowl has sweet crunchy prawns with orangey roe!

Our only complaint might be their al-denta thick vermicelli that doesn't absorb the flavorsome stock. And the shrimps that were served without deveining? We used the chopsticks to push out the black digestive tract. Easy.

Nothing stops us in the face of good food.

华记, Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodles

An old uncle said to the man before us in the queue, "Go eat from other stalls. Quit queuing." The man answered, "But today is my only rest day; and i came all the way for this." To this, i told Ric. Die die must eat once.

And we were right. Once might just be enough.

Regular patrons advised us to get the minimum order of $5 bowl; as they found the larger prawns in the $10 and $20 servings too 'stiff'. But today's prawns in the $5 doesn't seem right too. I can't quite put a finger on it. I can only say that it was unusually crunchy, maybe like crystal prawn. And despite the large size, i can't taste prawn's meat.

The magic is in the broth. The added sambal chili paste and pork lard on the soup should be accredit too. Together, they cooked up a rich, layered flavor of herbal sea-freshness. It is mysteriously impressive. Whether you like it or not, will be subjective. But you just gonna try it here, once.

崇正, Chung Cheng Chilli Mee

Prawn Noodle, dry - Chili Noodle ($4, M)

Some food got me excited all over again when i'm reviewing food photos for the blog. This is one of them. I was immediately reminded of the spiciness of the chili that was nose sniffingly hot! They don't call it chili noodle for nothing you know. The crunchy sweet prawns and meat-falling-off the bones pork ribs. It was yummilicious all over again.

I'm not a pork rib person. But i really like the pieces here. A stall from the era of our grandparents; you just got to get burn at least once.

Ci Yuan Community Club - the $2.80 Hawker Centre

#01-29 Traditional Pork Rib Prawn Noodle (Dry, or Soup $2.80)

We did came for the $2.80 dishes. Wanted to see the honesty of a $2.80 offering compared with our usual $2.50 and $3 in the neighborhood market. Our observations were of course, limited only to the stalls we tried on this page.

On serving size and generosity of ingredient, the $2.80 is clearly lacking behind $3. But it won by good recipe. Meaning the soup, sauce and seasoning that determine the success of a dish are expertly concocted. Ingredients are fresh but in smaller pieces. The $2.80 bowl doesn't fill you up. Many thus chose to 'up-size' their orders by paying more.

Still Ci Yuan Hawker Centre is worthy of repeats and exploration, where young entrepreneur hawkers are seen hard at work. Food choices are aplenty and tasty. The clean, airy and spacious dining hall doesn't leave you smelling like a kitchen. I fell for the place at once.

The food that we had tonight was above average, and totally enjoyable. You just need to order more.

#01-31 Leo Satay Cup Set (5 random sticks of Chicken & Pork + Ketupat + Cucumber & Pineapple Cuts, $2.80)

#01-14 Teochew Satay Bee Hoon ($3.50), Laksa ($2.80)

#01-18 JB Handmade Pau. Chwee Kueh (4 Pcs, $1) Chee Chong Fun ($1.50) Rice Dumpling ($1.80)

Geylang Laksa & Prawn Noodle

Upon reading this stall from Dr Tay at ieat, Ric says we drive down Sims Drive to 'eat wind' and noodles for breakfast :))

According to Dr Tay, the stall serves "old school" Laksa which he defines one that is "very fragrant but not overly spicy or overly rich such that you can down a whole bowl and not feel jelak. (bloated)". Well, that was exactly how it feels like. But because it doesn't bowl you over, you might simply register it as any typical bowl of good Laksa from your neighborhood hawker.

Ingredients are plentiful. Both for its Laksa and Prawn Mee. Lots of cockles and fresh prawns for the Laksa; even more prawns for the Prawn noodle! Between the 2, i actually enjoyed the light and flavorful prawn broth over the curry Laksa. You tell me?

Heng Heng Prawn Mee Soup

Prawn Noodle Soup ($2.50)

Price Update in 2016 ($3)

While waiting for our Dunman Rd Wanton Noodle, we were drawn by a strong whiff of prawn mee soup from the neighbouring table of 4. We footmark the hawker back to his folksy little stall where he enjoys a steady stream of customers.

Eager to try, we too ordered a small bowlful to share and drained the soup till the last drop!

545 Whampoa Prawn Noodle

Prawn Noodle, soup ($3)

No prawn noodles are quite the same and we really can't take good prawn noodles for guaranteed - my thought after our planned visit to the famous stall at Whampoa Drive Market, Blk 91 ended in disappointment.

The stall does have a long list of orders from their regulars and a wait is expected while they serve to your table.

Prawn Noodle, dry ($3)

With many having the dry version of their noodles, we could see why when ours arrived; it was certainly more flavorsome than their soupy selection. And after the serving of lukewarm soup, we decidedly X-out the stall when we tasted the blandness of their de-shelled prawns.

Newton Meng Kee Prawn Noodle @ Jurong Island

Prawn Kway Teow Mee, dry ($3)

We were finally back to Oasis Sakra canteen for my hot hot Prawn Bee Hoon soup! Ric had offered to pack it when he entered the Jurong Island earlier but i refused to hear of it cos i love to have my soup hot hot hot!

Guys with heavier taste buds here often opted for the dry version which was ladled richly with fried shallot oil; it was equally bewitching! Slurp! Slurp! Slurp up!

(Entry to Singapore's Jurong Island govern by valid security passes)

Prawn Noodles in Shunfu Market

Quan Ann (全安) and Huat Heng (发兴) Prawn Noodle stall, just apart by 1 stall and a doorway.

This has always been the case when there are more than 1 stall selling the same type of food, it always set you thinking, "Which stall better leh?" Ric and his Sis had their individual preferences of this 2 Prawn Noodle stalls in Shunfu Market; and i'm here to judge as the neutral party ;)

Our Presidential Election had just ended this early morning at 4:30am with a recount of votes; we both fell asleep at 2am and this was late breakfast at 11am. Seems many people were late too, had to wait for our noodles as both stalls served out their list of outstanding orders..

Huat Heng (发兴) Prawn Noodle Soup ($2.50)

Quan Ann (全安) Prawn Noodle Soup ($2.50)

Can you see the visible difference? You can't be wrong to judge a Prawn Noodle by the color and texture of its broth; yes, the denser soup base of Huat Heng was indeed tastier. And we both like its crisp fried pork lard.

So, it's now 2 votes against 1.

Big Bowl of $2 Prawn Noodles!

Prawn Kway Teow Mee Soup ($2)

It's certainly hard to believe that $2 could still get you a decent bowl of Prawn Noodles with all the works! And not at all an undersized; the bowl should feed you modestly.

We were at the revamped North Bridge Road Market and Food Centre, 顺发 Prawn Mee Soup Stall. Their dry noodle version would be equally satisfying ;)

顺发 - $2 Prawn Noodle

Beside our favourite Ke Shuan Xing Carrot Cake stall at North Bridge Food Centre is this Prawn Noodle stall that serves out real big bowl of noodle at $2 only.

Prawn Noodle, dry ($2)

Yummylicious... and filling!
With all fresh ingredients used!

A humble stall with very friendly service that's certainly worth your support. They are one of our favourite $2 Prawn Mee stall other than Niu Ji at Bedok South.

Covent Garden Prawn Noodle

It's the only stall with a queue here (self-service) at Havelock Cooked Food Centre (#01-24), you wouldn't miss it.

Prawn Mee, Soup ($2)

Prawn Mee, dry ($2)

The portion is small for a $2 bowl but filling enough for my Breakfast appetite :) We do find its dry version much flavorful than its soupy one.

Some were ordering for their $3 version with Pig's tail!
You like Pig's tail?

Simple eat.
