The many marketing efforts for movie L: Change the World, did nothing to entice my attention till i read a review in My Paper that credited the film, especially its 1st and 2nd episodes that was much into mind thinking, or mind guessing.
I had then made sure to catch the Death Note and Death Note: The Last Name when they were televised on Channel 8.
And boy, they were good - i was hats off to the vast imagination of the ingenious manga writer Tsugumi Ohba, whose identity is as secretive as his created character L. Illustrator Takeshi Obata deserve a special mention, no doubt.
The star of the whole episode was definitely L, a genius detective who tries to solve the mystery deaths using calculated process of elimination and arithmetical analysis, as he quickly narrows down the list of suspects.
His dubious eyes, thumb-sucking gesture and diet of lollipops, puddings, chocolate bars and pastry snacks had us in awe of this eccentric yet high intelligent quotient character. Sweet-toothed, hunchbacked poise, semi-reclusive character just doesn't mix with intelligence in our real world.
And i could never forget Ryuk, the Death God of his awesomely created image. Not the least frightful, he came upon one as likable with his unique diet of apples only.
Ryuk had in fact appeared to be more human than Light when Light's overly righteous notion soon be overpowered by his own selfish pride that he wouldn't blink an eye killing his girlfriend and father to save his own skin.
It makes one understand that no man is infallible however noble his intention when given the power of playing God. A quote from George Orwell novel, Animal Farm says, "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely."
Planning to watch the Final Episode of Death Note, L: Change the World that chronicles the final 23 days of L's life when he last entered his name in Death Note: The Last Name - then this series is complete.
