Simple Waraku Dinner

A basin bowl sized Udon and hotplate pork Katsu were our dinner at Waraku. Looked little? But we were definitely bloated.

It's been a long while since we last visited Waraku, and food is still pleasantly 'Japanese'.

Nothing seems to come between me and the Waraku udon; i always, very often have it on our visit here. I like that it is more plump and chewy than the others. The pork katsu too, was thick and juicy, yet even more enjoyable was the egg omelet, serves over egg stock amd raw eggs! It was enticing, from the moment it bubbles its way to the table.

Food, Inc. (2008)

With all urgency, i urge you watch the Food Inc.

Not another documentary pressing on the cruelty of us being the carnivore, but one that tells the carnivore the food that it is eating - especially yucky if you are taking in lots of factory processed food.

The film touches only briefly, and does not build on your sympathy for these cultivated animals for food; but once you understand that there are things more intolerant than the killing, it is enough to put you off the next Fast food meal or packaged meat from factory farming.

This is one important film to watch. Now i know where, and how those food on the supermarket shelves comes about; and i could make the choice. And no matter how tasty the burger, fast food will meant just the fries, a sundae or an apple pie.

No Relish for Salt

Home-Styled Mushroom Cream Soup ($8.80++),
made with Swiss button & shiitake, drizzled with truffle oil

The evening starts quite wonderfully at the cozy restaurant of Relish by Wild Rocket as we enjoyed the whiff of truffle oil in our thick soup. Then, expectation drops drastically when the mains came up.

Grilled Pork Chop ($21.80++)
served with secret anchovy salsa verde, mashed potato, mesclun

Presumingly, a slab of naturally flavorsome grill was to be served but the good ingredient ruined by being over-salt. And having extra salted and fishy tasting anchovy salsa on our meat is rubbing salt on the wound.

Tasted some quality minced beef in the burger patty, but it was again overcast with salt. These savory dishes certainly goes well with the many choice of alcoholic drinks here; but we have no relish for salt.

Wild Rocket Beef Burger ($15.20++)
served with arugula, Sarawak pepper cream, sun-dried tomato relish and choice of fries or salad

新穎餅店, Sun Win Cake Shop

Winter Melon Wife Cake (HK$3 each, S$0.49)

Maybe we should all forget about Hang Heung, forget about Wing Wah and forget about Kee Wah when we next visit Hong Kong, and are shopping for some traditional wife cakes. I tell you why.

He was on a short trip to HK over the weekend and conveniently bought these wife cakes off the shelves of Sun Win Cake Shop, on 上環摩利臣街98號地下. Now, this nondescript hole-in-the-wall cake shop has an unbelievable making of palm-sized wife cake! Its winter melon filling is fat and chewy - some describes it as biting into candied winter gourd!

Definitely our best, so far.

Pine Garden's Cake - Cheap and Good

Black Forest, Orange Zest Chocolate, Tiramisu ($2.50 each)

Seems a long time from my last fresh cream cake. These from Pine Garden were received from colleague baby's full month and everyone was thrilled as the cakes filled the office with delicious aroma; some was the product from the alcohol used in the cakes!

Everybody's favorite has to be the Black Forest that comes with plum cherries within. Those who preferred lesser cream on their cakes bent towards the Orange Chocolate cake. Tiramisu is the disappointing one as it tasted just like our usual chocolate cake, we wouldn't know it's Tiramisu if my colleague didn't say so.

It was good enough cakes with affordable pricing. And Pine Garden do serves a chunky size of creamy and 'not sweet' chocolate eclair, remember to get them too.

Sizzling Pepper Lunch

Curry Beef Pepper Rice with Cheese ($10.20)

Can't get enough of Pepperlunch after our last date here for their Teppanyaki pasta. So nothing stops us when Groupon offers a $13 for $20 of the Pepperlunch menu.

We need an order of their famous Pepper rice, and of course, my new found love for hotplate pasta. Had craved for something rich and creamy, but while i was on the cheese cream, i yearned very much instead for their tangy tomato puree which we last had... the one which i licked the plate clean.

Catering from BBQ House

Skewer Sotong in Oriental Spicy & Premium Otah
It's been near 3 months of scorching heat without rainfall; anyone fancy an outdoor barbecue this afternoon? Yes, we are guilty by reason of insanity! The food was great today, and the company sporting - it was fantastic.

Between BBQ House and BBQ Wholesale, we opted to cater from BBQ House because they offer live barbecuing service for the party.

Original Marinated Buffalo Wings
See these hands snatching up the Buffalo wings? These were really delicious, albeit a tad over-burned. Especially delightful and interesting were their Chicken Kebab, Skewer Sotong and Shelless Prawn Hawailian too - it makes a BBQ more special than it is.

Without fail, there was also the Chicken, Mutton Satay, Chicken Cheese Cocktail Sausages and Premium Otah. But i noticed most of us didn't fancy a second serving of the Mozzarella Cheese Mussels which tasted fresh but plain.

BBQ House too, does a nice rendition of fried vermicelli and garden salad which compliments the all-meat menu. And after all the heat (from the sun and food), we were definitely grateful to find our Almond Longan dessert waiting in molten ice state; all packet drinks staying well-chilled in iced foam box!

Killiney's French Toast

French Toast Set ($4.90)

Everybody love a French toast, but never know you could do it oil-less!

French toast at Killiney is not pan-fried in oil but toasted - this is the healthiest cooking. It is clever! Staying crisp on the outside yet soft fluffy on the inside; and full of the eggy flavor. Then together with their winning Kaya coconut jam, we have Asian's tastiest French toast!
